Rookie Draft Empty Rookie Draft

Post by Macca Sat Dec 12, 2009 11:09 am

****Mod Note****
This post has been moved and has become a new proposal (see further down).
It will probably replace "3.4 Mid-Season Draft" in the new constitution.
****End Mod Note****

Perhaps the bottom tier could be increased and completed as an online draft over the months that lead in to the season?
By this I mean, perhaps we could do the top two tiers...

Then do the rest on here over a few weeks?

Or ...how about a rookie draft? How could we tie that in?
Could we keep the current set up...then have a rookie draft, for those keen...online...to take another say 5-10 players that can be upgraded by say Round 12 or deleted?

just a thought....maybe those rookies can only be players who have played less than xx games? 20...30?

I'd like to see more activity here at the AGM before I would advocate an online draft - although having the bottom tier online has merit.

Rookie draft - are these like a reserve group that can be upgraded if you lose players to long-term injury?

Yeah I think the rookie list would be pretty simple...

You can upgrade at any time, but must delist a player to do so.
The 'rookie' then goes in their place on the list.

That is delist a player at 9...the rookie goes into 9 and the delisted player is gone forever.

At seasons end, you are entitled to upgrade any rookie.

In fact, you could (like the AFL) make the rookie draft optional.
Then the people who do a bit of research can get rewarded.

Fire up the proposal, Scottie and beam me up! Rookie Draft 44790

Rookie Draft Empty Re: Rookie Draft

Post by Jason Sat Dec 12, 2009 11:36 am

I like the idea of a rookie draft, but worry that some people already have issues with us drafting 35 players. But like you say Gerry if its optional then they cant really complain as they have their chance.

And its a shame that it seems that not everyone gets on the forum and becomes more active in this. IMO in future, any new coaches that come in should be more active on the forum. Especially if we intend to go fully online with this.

Post by Macca Sat Dec 12, 2009 11:45 am

I hereby nominate

Rookie List

A body of 10 players will be listed as 'rookies'.
Rookies may NOT be named in your team.
To be named, these players may be upgraded to the Senior List.
They may be upgraded at any time.

The method of upgrading is by posting a ROOKIE UPGRADE in the Rookies section.

To upgrade a 'Rookie' you must first delist a Senior List player. This player is then placed back into the available player list for the following season.

The Rookie Draft

The Rookie Draft is held online, on this Forum, in reverse ladder order.

It begins on the first Saturday at 9.00am following the PSD.

Coaches have 36 hours from the last pick (time listed online) to pick a player before forfeiting their right to that pick. Once a coach has passed twice, the remaining picks are also forfeited.

Rookie Listed players must have played 30 games or less to be eligible for the rookie draft.

At years end, those players who have played more than 30 games and are not upgraded to senior list status, will be placed back in the available players list.

Those who have played 30 games or less may be retained on the Rookie List should the coach so wish.

I like your proposal a lot Macca. If it gets passed it will be interesting to see how many people actually participate.

It wont get passed because people fear change.

But it'd add a layer of interest for me.

Really would promote the kids. Which will scare those who have no idea.

I think this is why I like the idea the most. I get more of a thrill from drafting an unknown kid and seeing him develop into a FF stud. If you were to ask me who my favourite player on my team is, I would say Kurt Tippett. Not because he is my best as clearly he's not. But its from when I drafted him he was an virtually an unknown.

I love the idea of having players in reserve to upgrade when you lose a senior player through injury.
Imagine drafting a Joel Selwood as a rookie...drool...
Why 10 players?
Surely 5 is enough?
What part of the constitution would it go under? I don't think it applies to this section.
Perhaps we can swap 3.4 since this is about the Mid-Season draft. Ah....Kade Simpson...my only relic from the last one...

One comment. Why 36 hours?
If all 12 coaches want 5 or 10 rookies and choose to use 36 hours for each pick that makes a total of (say for 10 rookies) around 4000 hours or 180 days for the Rookie Draft to be completed!
How about 2 hours? (12 x 10 x 2 = 240 hours = 10 days max)

I guess 3 days is OK as a maximum, but we would expect most picks to be done within a day of each other?

Croz, that's about 20 minutes per pick (assuming a 12 x 10 draft).
That's not a lot of time.

Question. Why would we make the process of the rookie draft any different to the actual PSD?

Either coaches want to take part or they dont. If they do, then they will make themselves available for whatever day it is being held on and they go into the draft prepared which makes it no different to the actual PSD?

I can see no reason why the rookie draft should go on longer than 2 days.

Rookie Draft Empty Re: Rookie Draft

Post by Macca Sun Dec 13, 2009 5:22 am

Yeah I suppose my initial thinking was that by allowing longer periods between picks I was opening it up to 'reducing stress to get online'...but in actual fact making the time between longer I am actually demanding people stay 'involved' for longer.

Perhaps what we need is for the interested parties to commit then to have two or three 'Rookie Draft Days' whereby over the span of 24 hours we can chip away at getting the players on board.

One way of getting people involved would be to make players who are eligible for Rookie status unavailable for main draft (PSD).

I really like the idea of an online Rookie Draft the more I think about it.

It really opens up the notion of project players who can be held for two years without effecting your main list.

I love the idea and would vote for it.

I can already hear the 'whingers' saying "Oh, it's already too complicated!"

Again...I love the idea.

Well guys I know u love havin' a go at all the 'non-regulars' of this forum, however, please keep in mind that not all of us can just hop on at any hour and check out what is going on (still working here!!) ha ha...anyway, I think the rookie draft sounds sensational, but like u said, it will need to be a simple process - I think 5 rookies max.

See - I do contribute!
