Changes to 3.4 Mid-Season Draft

Post by gerry on Sun Dec 13, 2009 1:43 am

****Mod Note****
There are two issues that are not resolved with this proposal:
1) the number of rookies
2) the amount of time given to pick a player during the rookie draft.
If you vote yes to this, please presume that the Exec. will resolve these issues before the draft.
****End Mod Note****

Macca's proposal, slightly rejigged.

3.4 Mid Season Draft (MSD) The Rookie List and the Rookie Draft

As of the AGM 2006 there shall be no Mid-Season DraftRookie List

A body of 5/10 players will be listed as 'rookies'.
Rookies may NOT be named in your team.
To be named, these players may be upgraded to the Senior List.
They may be upgraded at any time.

The method of upgrading is by posting a ROOKIE UPGRADE in the Rookies section.

To upgrade a 'Rookie' you must first delist a Senior List player. This player is then placed back into the available player list for the following season.

The Rookie Draft

The Rookie Draft is held online, on this Forum, in reverse ladder order.

It begins on the first Saturday at 9.00am following the Pre-Season Draft.

Coaches have 36 hours from the last pick (time listed online) to pick a player before forfeiting their right to that pick. Once a coach has passed twice, the remaining picks are also forfeited.

Rookie Listed players must have played 30 games or less to be eligible for the rookie draft.

At years end, those players who have played more than 30 games and are not upgraded to senior list status, will be placed back in the available players list.

Those who have played 30 games or less may be retained on the Rookie List should the coach so wish.

I personally think Rookies should actually be from the AFL Rookies list.

No Croz...as 'rookies' in the AFL Rookies list cannot play.
In the AFL 'rookies' need to be upgraded to Senior List status to be able to play...which would be just like our Rookies if we did uptake this proposal.

Yeah, I know...but I thought the idea of a rookie draft was to hold onto a newbie in the hope they will be upgraded either later in the year (due to long term injury i.e. Peverill) or in the following year.

That is what Rookies are?

Im going to vote for this, but im not sure I agree with the time frame of 36 hours, seems a little excessive.

But if thats the price I have to pay to get this through then im all for it.

Yes, but the issue is you may want/need to upgrade them and can't because the AFL club may not have.

My proposal was to have a Rookie system like the AFL, but designed to fit our needs.

Maybe Croz and GC could amend my proposal to say something like "the time frame of the rookie draft will be advised by the Executive" thus leaving it open until we find out who will be involving themselves.

I agree the 36 hrs is excessive. My initial thought was to allow more time to get more saying 'yeah I can get on within that time frame'...BUT i think the online AGM has proven people cant really be stuffed.

I say we set it up to be run one night and those that enter it get rewarded.

But arent these rookies supposed to be a supplement to our lists, and not an addition to the 35 players we already have?

I really dont have a problem with it, in fact I think it is quite exciting, but I am not sold on the wording.

30 games is actually alot, and this is the main reason I voted against. I am sure there are plenty of players who have played less than 30 games and are already proven 'guns'

I dunno..the more I think of it the more I like it....just think 30 is too high.

Yeah fair call.
The reason I went for 30 is because until they have played a season you wouldnt know anything about them. That said, it was a pretty instantaneous decision...I would be happy with less...say 20?

Err, guys read the mod note.
If this gets passed, the exec will deal with the number of rookies and the time between selection.
However, 30 matches stays.
If you don't like it, vote against it and then reformat it for next year.
