Have we set it yet?

Would be truly fantastic to know who is available well in advance as to avoid the ...

i really feel there is no harm in being able to change our retainess after they are locked in due to a long term injury.

im not locking them in until i have to because of the above reason.

but yes, it would be easier to prepare if they were all locked in now...

Yeah you are probably right.
Should be able to lock them now...with a right to change up until the Tuesday/Wednesday before the draft?

The only problem would be in regards to trading players then wanting to change your retainees???

Croz and Gerry - we should look at a more flexible way to allow people to lock and change if necessary??

I think it would depend on how you would actually classify long term injury, before I could agree with your statement.

I, like a lot of others, put a bit of effort and time into the draft. I would hate to do that for someone to change their mind for a "6 week injury" and throw out my preparation.

But if we are talking season ending or half a season etc then I dont see a big issue with what your saying as a change would be justified. Basically I wouldnt want it to allow people to manipulate or gain advantage by the rule change.

But I agree a date has to be set for the retained players as its getting closer to the PSD.

Last season I didnt get my prospectus until after the draft, but in previous years yes I have had one on draft night.

And no I havent got this years yet, I dont think they are out yet mate. But I might be wrong. Have you seen them in the shops already?

If you pre ordered you should either have it or it should be in the mail.

I dunno how effective they are 'in' the draft, but they are pretty informative reading the draft week, that is fo shizzzzzle.

You know I almost love the lead up to PSD more than the actual night. The anticipation of who you want to draft and finding gems that you think will explode during the season is always fun. And the Prospectus always helps!

Have you received yours yet? I did order it, but havent received mine yet.

No I have not received it.
I know that many have.

Interestingly, Big Footy and similar sites have had many people posting about not receiving there Prospectus, despite ordering in December. Equally, there are others who ordered a week ago that have theirs!

Go figure.

I actually find older Prospectiii more useful.

I got mine!
And, yes I will also be consulting last year's edition.
Maybe even 2008....

BTW - there are a LOT of good potential ASFFL rookies out there. What a smorgasbord!

I ordered mine in December as well, but didnt think they were being delivered just yet

And yes the older ones are good, especially for the players that were drafted in that year as it gives their junior background as well.

There seems to be no logic or pattern behind why some have received their Prospectii (yeah thats what I call them) and others have not.

It's very un-Australian in my books.

First in first served is a mantra of good Aussie business.

XB - I too am aggrieved!

I will have ZERO preparation time in 2010...

Have AFL Coaches Conference on next weekend, and doing my Level Two Coaches accreditation the weekend after.

I will be going in cold.

I am gone.

I know you said this just to get me to bite, but I really cant help myself. If you are so kind would you mind telling me what it says about 2 of my favourite players, Gibbs and Murphy.

And Macca you do realise that no one and I mean NO ONE is buying the fact that your going into the draft unprepared. Yes you might not have the time to do your normal prep, but we both know you will do more than 90% more work than the rest of the coaches in the league.

Ok so your saying you have done zero research already? Of course not, I dont believe it.

Knowing what was ahead of you, schedule wise, you would have started researching players a long time ago.

Besides I seriously get the feeling most coaches only start looking at the PSD a few days before the actual event. Of course there are a few exceptions, like Gerry, Croz, Trucker, myself and probably a few others.

I have a hit-list already yes.

But that is it...I will be very under-prepared.

I will probably read various Prospectii before sleep every night as a 'fallback'.

I know people like Megabonehead will come in much better prep'd in 2010. You have never seen the best of that wily old greek fox.

Slap Dash FC will be thereabouts also...be wary!

I know that what you call un-prepared most coaches consider doing some serious prep work. So im not worried you will fall far from grace this season. You are a contender with just your retained list, add a few extra players and you are a top 2 team no doubt!

And I hope your right mate about Pez and Andy. I know both, when motivated, are very good at this game. So it will be good for the league to have so many teams vying for a top 8 position. Will make the league more fun.

Re: Final date for locked retainees?

Once upon a time, Mega was the trade master.

He would roll into the staff room with a glint in his eye and a trade sheet in his pocket. He was brazen, well informed and was the absolute master of manufacturing deals.

Since then, the League and its coaches have grown up. His methods are stale.

If, and its a big if...he could fall into line with current day thinking regards to trades, he would be dangerous.

But, he hasn't done a real or influential trade since he traded with Andy and I in the famous three way deal of 2004.

He has not got the balls to trade players like Swan or SJ for his own good. He invariably wants too much. Want proof? He offered me a second round pick for Pavlich...now I ask you (or anyone), where would Pavlich go if i delisted him? I will tell you...pick one or two.

Pez needs to reinvent himself and I would challenge anyone who thinks the same to post in agreement.

I will say though...DO NOT discard him. He knows his shit!

I have tried a few times to trade with Pez, so I understand why he has a rep for being hard to trade with. Although my trade with just draft picks was pretty easy once I told him to look at the Spartan picks instead of the Wolves, as he thought I was trying to fleece him Embarassed Sorry Pez Very Happy

However like you said I know he is good at the game and shouldnt be written off. But by the same token, a lot of coaches arent bunnies anymore and getting one sided deals isnt as easy as it used to be. The game has evolved, even since I joined. But knowing Pez it wont take him long, if he wants to, to get back his mantle of a feared trader.

Nope...I am saying he won't complete a single trade this year.

AND, no this is not me lighting a fire in his bush to get him to come out...it's my honest opinion.

He simply does not want to 'give in order to get'.

I think a lot of it will depend on how motivated he is to compete. He has proven with his old team that when motivated he can assemble a formidable team. My only question is since he left Gleeson he no longer has that daily interaction with the other coaches and thus lost a little interest. Especially as he didnt get his old team back.

I sincerely hope that Pez and Andy for that matter, gain a bit of their old spark, as the league is so much better with them active.

Without blowing my own trumpet, I think I have proved that if motivated and prepared to put in a little work, granted with a little luck, you can turn a team around from a cellar dweller to a legit top 8 team. So I hope that Pez does the same.

Agreed.

Logic would suggest your model of taking the best kids and sitting pretty for a while would be the surest way of dragging yourself back into the game.

Its the old battle...take the best kids and be good in 24 months or take the serviceable warriors and be top 8 now.

Pez, and to a lesser extent Andy, pride themselves on being 'competitive' every year.

I honestly think that unless Pez or Andy think they can win the flag in the next 2-3 years, then they should consider trading Swan and Riewoldt respectively.

I guess I am a believer to this method by trading Cross for 12 gamer Grimes.

In a way though I had it easy as no one else had taken the route I had to such a degree. I mean I remember when I drafted a player in the middle tier who was in their mid 20's if I was sure he wasnt too old for my team. To put it bluntly I was mocked. Not for the last time in the game I should add. See my trades last year for that.

But yes I agree if you dont think you have a legit shot in the next few years you could do worse than draft/trade for young stars.

Although in your case I found it very interesting as you already have a great mix of players. Why I like your recent trades is because you have given up legit stars but gotten just as good in return, but they are a lot younger. In essence you have traded your way into the top few teams for years to come.
